Alan R. Gerstein, MD
1935-2025
Alan (Dick) Gerstein was born in Springfield to Mae (Dunn) and Morris Gerstein and died June 7, 2025. He graduated from Classical High School, 1953, Wesleyan University, 1957, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 1961, where he was elected to the Medical Honor Society. He interned at Boston City Hospital, was a resident at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC for one year and earned a fellowship in Nephrology at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in LA. He joined the US Air Force and served for two years in Biloxi, MS. He returned to Springfield and established the first dialysis center at Springfield Hospital (now Baystate Medical Center) in 1968. He went into private practice in internal medicine on Maple Street in Springfield in 1970 and maintained his practice for decades. He was a member of the American Physicians Fellowship for Israel and was a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
He leaves his wife Bette (Diamond) Gerstein, his brother Dr. Edward Gerstein, his sons Meir (Shimrit) and David, his daughter-in-law Jennifer Jackson, his granddaughter Keren Gerstein, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Moshe.
He will be remembered for his intelligence, sense of humor, and his passion for the State of Israel.
A funeral will be held Monday, June 9 at 11 am at the Ascher Zimmerman Funeral Home in Springfield.
