“A life well lived, a life well loved.”
Elizabeth “Liz” Wolfson passed away at age 98 on June 15, 2025 at her home in Natick, MA after a full and vibrant life. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, she pursued her education at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan, ultimately graduating from Springfield College with a degree in education. Liz and her husband, Irv, raised their children in Springfield and Longmeadow, MA. She later treasured living in downtown Boston before moving to Natick last year. She deeply loved her family and maintained meaningful connections with relatives near and far.
Her greatest creative passion was painting stunning florals and luminous abstract art over the last 60 years. Her work was reviewed by The New York Times and was featured at numerous galleries. At 92, she won 2nd place at the Beacon Hill Art Walk, an event she eagerly anticipated during the first weekend of June each year; she’d encourage you to mark your calendar for next year. All of her family and many friends will cherish her paintings in their homes across the country.
Liz found much joy in taking part in Boston’s rich cultural activities including watching the Boston Marathon, the Boston Symphony and volunteering at the Boston Ballet. An avid Red Sox fan, she loved chatting about “the ball game”.
She played bridge with friends every week and enjoyed antiquing. She was a wonderful host and cook - she and Irv always had a spectacular New Year’s Eve party. She also enjoyed traveling to the UK, Europe and Cape Cod. A particular favorite was traveling to the theatre festival in Stratford, Ontario.
She is survived by her children, Susan (Michael) Bowden of Miramar Beach, FL and James (Edith) Wolfson of Natick, MA; grandchildren Elizabeth (Joshua) Sausville of NYC, Caroline (Brent) Campbell of Issaquah, WA, Thomas (Andreina) Bowden of Miami, FL, Andrew Wolfson of Austin, TX and Isaac Wolfson of NYC; great grandchildren Jack, Lily and Patrick Sausville, and Eva Bowden. She is also survived by her brother Norm (Marilyn) Leven of Grand Rapids, MI. She was predeceased by her husband Irving Wolfson and her brothers Paul and Seymour (Gloria) Leven.
A private service will be held at noon on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at Sinai Memorial Park 584 Cottage Street, Springfield, MA followed by Shiva at 6pm at Jim and Edith Wolfson’s house at 22 Farm Hill Road Natick, MA 01760.
A Memorial Celebration/dinner will follow on July 27th in Springfield with details at a later date. She would have appreciated any memorial contributions be made to the Irving S. Wolfson Award scholarship at the University of Michigan department of Mathematics or to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where she was successfully treated for cancer 70 years ago.
