George Sachs, 85, of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, after a courageous 5½ year battle with cancer. Born December 18, 1940, in the Bronx, New York, he was the son of the late William and Netti Sachs.
George graduated from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and earned his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Boston University in 1962, where he was a member of the fencing and rifle teams. During his college years, he obtained his private pilot's license, beginning a lifelong passion for aviation.
After graduation, George worked as an aerospace engineer at Hamilton Standard Division of United Technologies from 1962 to 1966, where he developed combat aircraft turbo propeller systems and electron beam laser welding technology. In 1966, he joined Acme Metals & Recycling, a family business founded by his wife's grandfather, Charles Cohen, in 1938. George's engineering expertise transformed the company, making it the second scrap processor in Massachusetts to install a state-of-the-art 300-ton hydraulic guillotine shear. In 1972, he and his father-in-law Myer Cohen renamed the business Acme Metals & Recycling, Inc., embracing the emerging recycling movement. George proudly served as president and CEO until age 83, earning the deep respect and loyalty of employees, many of whom worked alongside him for over 20 years.
A man of remarkable work ethic and determination, George was also a devoted Mason for over 50 years, achieving the prestigious 33rd degree. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed driving his cherished 1968 Firebird in the summer months. A technology enthusiast from the early days of personal computers, he loved introducing his grandchildren to new innovations. He delighted in games, regularly beating his family at rummy, dominoes, and chess well into his eighties. Above all, George treasured traveling with his beloved wife and spending time with his family.
George is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Judith (Cohen) Sachs; his sister Marion Libow; his son Greg Sachs (Elena); his daughter Dina Berry (Paul); and his adoring grandchildren Paul Berry (Francesca), Jake Berry (Olivia), and Sam Berry. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Xu and the exceptional staff at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, as well as the dedicated team at Bay State Medical Center for their compassionate care.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 10th, 12:00 pm, at Sinai Temple, 1100 Dickinson St, Springfield, MA 01108. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in George's memory (Donate to Dana-Farber and help fight cancer ' The Jimmy Fund).
