Goldie Miller (1924 - 2024)
Amherst, Massachusetts
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Goldie Miller, who left this world peacefully at the age of 99 on September 18, at her home, surrounded by family.
She was born on December 3rd in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents from Kiselin and Rovno (Rivne), Ukraine (Russia). Goldie attended Brooklyn College, where she earned degrees in elementary education and French. She was only the second member of her family to attend college.
Goldie was the beloved wife of Stanley Miller for an incredible 69 years, a union marked by a deep love and countless memories which they shared with their family and friends.
She and Stan shared their love of culture through music and drama, attending literally hundreds of concerts, plays, and Broadway shows. They also viewed exhibits at many museums, and had fabulous trips to Paris, London, Rome and especially Israel. One of their special loves for many summers was the Berkshires and Tanglewood.
Throughout her life Goldie had a deep love of Judaism and everything French. She was fluent in French, and prior to her marriage to Stan, she traveled to France for an extended trip with her close friend Anita.
At age 90, she and Stan were thrilled to be able to attend a winter holiday party at the White House, where she was hugged by President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Goldie was the proud mother of three sons, Martin, Phil, and Rick. She created a space for them to learn and grow. Her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support allowed for them to become well-rounded individuals. She also welcomed three daughters-in-law, Brenda, Vivienne, and Laura into her family with open arms, treating them as her own. Her family was her greatest joy, and she found immense pride in her grandchildren, Aaron, Liliya, Iz, Shaine (Filip), and Sam, each of whom brought light to her life in their own unique way. She was blessed with a great-granddaughter, Chivonne, whose presence added a new form of happiness in her life, and through the power of technology could keep in touch with through video calls.
Goldie began her forty-year teaching career in West Hempstead and continued it in Plainview. As a career teacher and educational consultant, Goldie dedicated many years shaping young minds, a calling she fulfilled with patience, passion, and endless cups of coffee! Her kindness and intellect helped pave the way for future generations.
Having lived for over 60 years in Plainview, Long Island, she created friendships and meaningful connections that spanned decades. Whether it was holding court at the Plainview diner for breakfast, pounding the pavement at 6am with her walking group, or taking walks with others, she was always the one to go to when needing comfort and support.
She regularly socialized and threw dinner parties and holiday gatherings for friends and family. She served as an officer of Temple Beth Elohim in Old Bethpage for decades, supported the PTA, and the Plainview teacher’s union (PCT) and baked her renowned “Bubbe” cookies, which she would gift to those who knew her best. Goldie was tireless in her support of family, friends, students and her community. Simply put, she was the “Energizer Bunny”.
Making the big move to Amherst Massachusetts in 2021, she was able to spend more time with her children and grandchildren, which led to many dinners and cherished memories.
Goldie was very close with her loving siblings and their families. That circle extended to in-laws and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
She is predeceased by her mother Anna Goldman, her father Morris Goldman, and her siblings Sarah, Dave, Max and Sam Goldman.
Her legacy is one of love, kindness, and dedication—a life lived with purpose, grace, and a gentle heart. Though we will miss her dearly, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit will continue to guide us, just as it did during her time with us. Goldie’s life was a testament to the power of love.
Shiva will be held at: 3 Wintergreen Circle, Amherst, MA on Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd with the evening service beginning at 7pm.
