Judy Feldman (Belson), died at the age of 86 on July 9th, 2024. Judy was devoted to family, art and Judaism and, as she grew older, her own independence.
Judy Belson was born in Boston in 1937 and had wonderful memories of a childhood surrounded by her immigrant extended Jewish family living in Dorchester and greater Boston. She was among the first classes to graduate from Brandeis University and was the first Feldman to attend Camp Ramah, setting the stage for her sons and grandchildren.
She met Israel Feldman at an MIT Purim party and married him in 1957. She raised her children Dan, Joel and Ron, in Silver Spring, Maryland, providing them with love and support. She worked as a teacher, both in public and Hebrew schools, until her divorce when she needed to become financially independent, which she did by working at law firms in Washington D.C.
After her divorce, she spent her time doing exactly what she wanted to do. She loved all things art: collecting paintings, crafts, sculptures and photographs of all types, volunteering at art museums and focusing her travels on visiting galleries, artists, and museums in the United States and internationally. Her house became a space dedicated to art--with the downside that grandchildren were not allowed into many of the rooms.
As she did throughout her life, Judy continued to spend time helping others. She especially loved teaching English as a second language to new immigrants and left her family with many files of her inventive teaching methods and her pride in their accomplishments.
Judy lived with Parkinson’s Disease for almost 30 years, a fact that did not stop her from doing everything the exact way she wanted, even when that did not seem possible to anyone but her.
During all the change Judy experienced, she never lost her connection to family. She loved being with and talking about her children and especially her grandchildren; She could never get enough updates on how they were doing.
Judy is survived by her son Daniel Feldman, her daughter-in-law Emily Rubin and their two children, Jed and Ilan; her son Joel Feldman, her daughter-in-law Pamela Schwartz and their three children, Isaiah, Gabriel and Talia; and her son Ron, her daughter-in-law Julie Hirsch and their three children, Ethan, Eli and Sadie. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Belson.
Her family thanks Yodit Amdie and Yemi Desta for their love and support of Judy, and the team at Healing Hands for their incredible, around the clock care.
Donations to recognize Judy’s life can be made to HIAS or the Hirshhorn Gallery.
