Leonard Hyatt Cohen

March 10, 1941 — October 12, 2025

Leonard, “LEN-LENNY” Cohen 84 of Longmeadow, MA and Enfield, CT passed away Sunday, October 12, 2025 surrounded by his loving family after a lifetime of many serious illnesses. His struggle to survive can’t even be imagined.

He was born in New Haven, CT to the late Abraham and Mina (Hyatt) Cohen on March 10, 1941. Len grew up in Hamden, CT and graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1959. He continued his education at the University of Connecticut, then transferring to Quinnipiac College/University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. While at UConn, being a tremendous athlete in Soccer, and Golf, he was asked to play Soccer team for the Maccabi Olympic Team in Israel. What a honor it was for this young man whose legs and feet did magic with this ball.

Len started his career at the Accounting Firm Sagal Jacobs, followed his position at ELMCO, where he was comptroller for this distinguished oil company. Sid Horton, President was an amazing father-like figure to my beautiful husband. He went on to work at two other oil companies in CT after ELMCO closed continuing in the same capacity at Rivet and Titan Roofing. His last place of employment for several years was at the reputable BACON and WILSON, a situation he felt recognized for his work ethics and many kindnesses.

Len served in the Army during the time of the Vietnam War; 1966 – 1972 where he was in charge of tank patrol. He loved telling the story how everyone in his battalion had to march in rhythm and he was asked; Cohen, “why aren’t you moving along with your fellow soldiers?" His reply was, “Sir, because of my stature of 5’2 tall, I must stay in my place for I won’t be able to keep up." My Lenny, was really proud of serving.

The many things Len enjoyed doing was enthusiastically reading a 300 page book in two days and could spout out its contents verbatim after completion. He read continuously, plus his love for drawing horses and other animals was a favorite activity. In addition, Lenny’s engagement in all types of sports was especially rewarding to him when playing golf, swimming, and doing his best to beat his “Little Girl” in Scrabble. He truly enjoyed the several years he participated in Dragon Boat Racing on the CT River and competing in races with Carole by his side. Lastly, the most gratifying experience Lenny enjoyed was walking “60 miles with Carole for the Susan G. Comen Breast Cancer Walk in Boston the year after she dealt with her disease. Years after Len and Carole married, his love for Beth El led him to becoming V.P. of its brotherhood, plus other organizations.

Len exemplified the true meaning of love for his wife, Carole, children, grandchildren, many relatives on both sides from east to west coast and north to south, including his enormous amount of friends. There isn’t a person in this extremely large circle of people who haven’t conveyed to Carole and so many others that “Len was the sweetest, kindest, and most loving/giving man they every knew”. I, Carole, was the luckiest wife in the world.

In addition to leaving his ‘LITTLE AND BEAUTIFUL GIRL, CAROLE ADELE, he sadly leaves his children, Andy, Robbie, Sandra and grandchildren, Zachary, Olivia, Ilana, Olivia, Philip and Lilianne. Also, Len leaves behind many cousins and friends; one being Harold Miller (his childhood friend) plus Phil McElroy who passed not too long ago .

Lenny’s last words to the amazing doctor that held his hand on Sunday was, the love of my life for 52 years took care of me every minute, and all I wish for is that,
Others will care for her as she cared for me with such love, plus so many others in her life.

The funeral will take place at Temple Beth El, 979 Dickenson Street, Springfield, MA at 1:30 on Thursday. The service will be followed at the burial site in West Springfield, returning to the temple for a delicious spread in honor and memory of this especially beautiful human being. Shivah services will be Thursday directly following the mourner's meal, Sunday at 5:00 PM and Monday and Tuesday at 7:00 PM at Carole’s and Lenny’s home. Donations in Lenny’s memory can be made to Temple Beth El, the Kidney Foundation, or the Leukemia Research Foundation.
