Max (Marty) Martin Shepro was born on December 6, 1926 into a loving family in Holyoke and Springfield, MA. His blessed and wonderful life ended on August 12 2023 with dignity and comfort. He honored and loved his Judaic faith.
His family smartly emigrated from Odessa, Ukraine around 1900 and passed through Ellis Island. Marty was the son of Isaac and Sadie (Rifkin) Shepro. He had a kind half-sister Rosalind (Shepro) Sherman whose mother died of complications at childbirth.
He grew up surrounded by many close Tantes, Uncles and cousins. A cousin gave him a recycled bicycle when he was young, and he then enjoyed riding bicycles for many years into his 80s.
He faithfully served in the US Army at Fort Bragg, NC.
As a child he delivered tailoring, prepared by his father in Springfield MA, to the home of Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), on Garfield Street, which was, as Marty often said, “certainly not on Mulberry Street”.
He and his mother Sarah would occasionally travel to NYC to Radio City. They attended the 11 AM show, which cost $1.00, since that was the most cost effective time to attend. He brought our whole family there in the 1960s.
He was active in the Jewish community during his whole sweet life. He loved everything about Jewish music, and Yiddish. At Eisenberg, he became a leader of the Jewish life.
His life was much more than Tevye’s hopefullness in Fiddler’s Roof song: “If i were a rich man Posing problems that would cross a rabbi’s eyes!”… “And I’d discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day. That would be the sweetest thing of all.”
He had all of this and more. As such, he was very rich with unending love, questions, actions, good thoughts, and acts of kindness.
He met his wife, Shirley Chain Shepro, and married in 1953.
He loved his work as a purchasing agent at Romar Tissue Mills, in Wheelwright MA, and would regularly come home whistling a tune with happiness.
He joyously had a retirement career especially recycling medical equipment in Springfield MA; this was one of his greatest gifts to his community and provided enormous fulfillment for him.
He kindly and graciously loved his wife and children: Alan and Judy Shepro, Phyllis and David Winer, and David and Wendy Shepro; and grandchildren Michael Isaac Winer, Sarah Emily Winer, Sarah Ellen Shepro (Adam Mielniczuk) and great grandson Archie Michael Mielniczuk, Adam Louis Shepro (Zoe Rosenberg), and Jessica Lauren Shepro (Kyle Cullen). Max instilled in all of us a love for education, good music, and a spirit for justice and kindness for all.
He had a treasure-filled mountain of trivia and wit at his immediate command, attesting to his remarkable mind and spirit. There was so much more that we could have learned from him, but time has now ran out.
He was always kind and loving to all.
Our family is eternally grateful for the years of wonderful care at Eisenberg and Jewish Health Center.
