Michael Edward Scheer

April 5, 1945 — June 11, 2025

It is with deep heartache and heartfelt love that the family of Michael Scheer of Longmeadow, MA announces his passing on June 11, 2025.
Mike was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 5, 1945, the second child of Ben and Natalie Scheer. The family moved to Springfield, MA in 1955 and Mike graduated from the former Classical High School in 1962, where he played basketball, baseball, and soccer.
Mike achieved recognition in the community as both a softball player and coach, leading his Showcase team to secure multiple tournament and league titles. In 1985, the team was ranked first in the East by the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association. Mike won Pitcher of the Year in the Springfield Softball League and Most Valuable Player in the State Regional Championship Tournament. He also coached girls' softball in Longmeadow and served as league commissioner.
Mike earned respect in the flooring industry, starting as a salesperson at Allied Carpet in Springfield, then rising to Sales Manager, and ultimately Vice President and General Manager. In 2003 he opened Michael Scheer Flooring Contractors, a strategic Alliance Partnership with Dimauro Carpet and Tile, in East Longmeadow. The alliance proved quite successful and was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as one of the "Super Sixty" best privately owned businesses in the Pioneer Valley for five consecutive years.
He earned certification credentials in Project Management from the University of Minnesota, Professional Flooring Expert from Mohawk University, and was a guest lecturer for design classes on college campuses. In 2019 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern New England Floor Covering Association.
Mike was a staunch supporter of the armed forces and was a sustaining member of the United Service Organization (USO).
He was a lifelong Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Mets fan and as a child would walk from his home in Brooklyn to Ebbets Field where he would watch the likes of Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges, Peewee Reese, and Duke Snider play all summer long. His uncle was a ticket taker and would sneak Mike and his brothers into the games for free, including the 1969 Mets' World Series championship game.
Mike traveled extensively before illness sidelined him and loved visiting historic sites. His proudest moments included his wife, Pat, being named 2003 Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of Pioneer Valley, watching his daughter Amy lead her class into graduation carrying the American flag at The American University, being among thousands at San Diego Harbor welcoming the carrier fleet home, including his son-in-law Jake, back from the first of his three deployments to the Persian Gulf, and being able to hold his grandchildren, Sammy and Meghan.
Mike leaves his wife of 49 years, Pat (Mindel) Scheer, his daughter Amy, son-in-law Commander Jake (USN Retired), and granddaughter Meghan Schofield, all of Hollywood, MD, and his brothers Paul Scheer of Longmeadow, MA and Arthur Scheer of Broad Brook, CT.
He also leaves his cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and dozens of relatives, friends, neighbors, and business associates who will remember how he lived his life with integrity, humor, courage, grace, and generosity.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Natalie Scheer, sister-in-law Mary Scheer, and grandson Samuel Schofield.
The Scheer family wants to thank all the medical personnel who cared for Mike through the years and especially the staff at Pioneer Valley Dialysis Center for their compassion, care, friendship, and love.
