Rhona Chase 1929 - 2024
January 6, 2024
SPRINGFIELD – Rhona (Sheinhait) Chase, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 6, 2024 in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Born on May 22, 1929, in Malden, Mass. to Nathan and Mabel Sheinhait. Rhona was a resident of Longmeadow, Mass., and Boca Raton, Fla. She was predeceased by Irwin “Mike” Chase, her devoted husband of more than 50 years.
After graduating from the Katharine Gibbs School, Rhona worked at Donnelly Advertising Company in Boston. Stories she shared about her job are reminiscent of episodes of “Mad Men.”
Following a move to Longmeadow with Mike to raise their family, Rhona’s daily visits to her mother, father and aunt at the Jewish Geriatric Services (JGS) Nursing Home led to more than 35 dedicated years of volunteering there. As she provided comfort and assistance to the residents, she learned about the challenges facing Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Rhona and Mike worked with JGS in 2001 to create the Rhona and Mike Chase Clinical Ladder Program to provide in-house training and funding to CNAs.
Rhona was known as an outstanding and passionate bridge player. Her family knew to avoid calling her during certain news programs (looking at you, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell) and any football games that Tom Brady was playing in. She also considered herself fortunate to have taken some wonderful trips over the years with her husband and family, from Puerto Rico to travels to Israel and Europe.
Rhona is the beloved mother of daughters Jodie Chase and husband Stan Pechner, Claire Sullivan and Joseph Clark, and son J.R. Chase and Rochelle Forrest. She is the adored grandmother of Mollie and fiancé Charlie, Lauren and husband Paul, Mara and husband Mike, Zachary, Jordan, Isaac and fiancé Ashley, and great-granddaughter Maisie. She is the cherished sister of Lois Lovins and husband Nelson and she is predeceased by brother Gerald Sheinhait. She is remembered fondly by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There was a service privately held at Kodimoh cemetery on Thursday, 1/11/2024.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rhona and Mike Chase Clinical Ladder Program at Jewish Geriatric Services at 770 Converse St., Longmeadow, Massachusetts, 01106.
