In Loving Memory of Sara M. Black
May 22, 1931 – November 14, 2024
With heavy hearts, we share news of Sara M. Black’s passing. A cherished and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Sara peacefully departed this world on November 14, 2024, at the age of 93 in Florida.
Born on May 22, 1931, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Sara grew up with an adventurous spirit, boundless curiosity, and an open heart. Her life was a living example of compassion, generosity, and warmth, qualities that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Sara had a rare gift for making life beautiful, bringing joy and comfort to everyone around her. Her laughter was infectious, her meals were amazing, and her hugs were a balm for the soul.
A pillar of her community, Sara was co-owner and general manager of The Newsstand Book Stores and the Samuel Black Company in Western Massachusetts. Known for her tireless work ethic, kindness, and steadfast commitment to literacy, Sara was a respected leader in the retail bookstore industry. In addition to her professional life, she dedicated her time and energy to her family, her faith community at Beth El Temple, and anyone in need of help or a listening ear.
Sara’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife to the late Lewis “Woody” Black, who preceded her in death on May 18, 1996. She was a loving mother to and is survived by her daughter Susan Black Berger and son-in-law Adam Berger of California; son Andrew Black of Washington; son Everett Black of Florida; and son Michael Black and daughter-in-law Tonya Black of Pennsylvania. Her beloved grandchildren Adrian and Mollie Berger, Simon Black, and Lake Black, who she was endlessly proud of, will continue to honor her legacy, lessons, and memory forever in their hearts.
A graveside service celebrating Sara’s life will be held on Wednesday, November 20, at 11:00 a.m. at Beth El Cemetery in West Springfield, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Beth El Temple. Though our hearts are heavy, we are comforted by the memories of Sara’s love, wisdom, and light. Her spirit will forever guide and inspire us.
Sara was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. She is now reunited in peace with family and friends who passed before her, embraced by their love once more.
