It is with great sadness we share that Steven Alan Nison, of Longmeadow, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 86. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and attorney, he lived a life shaped by hard work, conviction, faith, and love for the people and institutions that mattered most to him.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1939 and raised in Ellington, Steve was a survivor of the great Hartford Circus fire of 1944. He graduated from Rockville High School in 1957 and Yeshiva University in 1961, later earning his law degree from the New England School of Law in 1965, where he graduated at the top of his class. For 55 years he ran his own law practice in Springfield and served as a bar advocate in criminal court, work he believed in deeply. He retired at 80 only when the pandemic forced him to do so.

Judaism was an enduring foundation in his life. He was a dedicated member of Congregation Beth Israel, where he served as board president for four years, and later Congregation B'nai Torah. Known for his strong singing voice, he cherished contributing musically through prayer and song. He also had a passion for photography, capturing flowers, sunsets, and friends' celebrations with a careful eye. A lifelong and devoted sports fan, he was especially loyal to the New York Yankees and enthusiastically supported the New England Patriots as well.

Steve was married for 52 years to the love of his life, Elaine (Berg) Nison. He was a proud father to Kimberly (Ed) Sullivan and Debra Nison (Anthony Kramer), and a loving grandfather to Harper and Hunter Sullivan, as well as Marlowe and Jordan Kramer-Nison. He was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Barbara (Sack) Nison of Ellington, and his sister, Francine (Nison) Brown.

In his final chapter, Steve faced stage four cancer with determination, humor, and grit. His family is deeply grateful to the nurses, aides, and staff of the Leavitt Jewish Nursing Home and Legacy Hospice, to the many doctors who supported him during his cancer journey, to Rabbi Wolf and Rabbi Yaffe for their blessings, and to family friend Ken Gorenstein for his support.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Lubavitcher Yeshiva Academy in Longmeadow or Congregation B'nai Torah in Springfield. A funeral service will be held at Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 44 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA, on Monday, March 30th at 1:00pm, followed by burial at Beth Israel Cemetery, 366 Kings Highway, West Springfield, MA. Shiva will be held that evening at the family home, 379 Inverness Lane, Longmeadow, MA, from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
