William Cohen, 96, of Longmeadow, husband of Evelyn (Lashin) Cohen, passed away on Tuesday April 9th. He was born in Holyoke, the son of the late Martha and Harry Cohen. Bill, as he liked to be called, graduated from Technical High School in Springfield where he excelled at tennis. Growing up, he worked in his family business, Pomona Market. After graduating from high school, he attended Ohio State and served in the Army during the Korean War. He helped run the Pomona Market with his father after his military service and took over when his father passed away. Bill retired in 1996 and loved to tinker to fix things and found the most enjoyment being around family. He enjoyed summers with his family on the Connecticut shoreline and was a long time member and regularly attended services at Kodimah Synagogue and its successor B’nai Torah. Bill was selfless in his devotion to his family, and always wanted to make sure that everyone got along and were healthy.
In addition to his wife of 56 years Evelyn, he leaves his older sister Charlotte, sons David, Harry (Shari), and Mark, grandchildren Hannah, Maya, and Ben as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Service will be Friday April 12th at 11am at Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home in Springfield with burial following at Kodimoh Cemetery in West Springfield. Shiva will take place at the family home in Longmeadow following the funeral until 4pm, and Sunday from 2-5pm. Visiting hours Saturday 2-5pm.
