DR. WILLIAM S. LICHT, DMD

Longmeadow-Dr William S. Licht, 101, died Wednesday July 31st at Baystate Medical Center. He was born May 17, 1923 in Springfield to his late parents Bennie and Sarah Licht. He graduated from Classical High School class of 1941, where he lettered in basketball, baseball and soccer. He attended American international College on a sports scholarship.
After the Pearl Harbor attack, Willaim joined the Navy pre-officer program, attending Trinity College, and then Northwestern University, graduating as an Ensign USNR and served in the Atlantic as an Anti-Submarine Officer. He was transferred to the Amphibious Fleet, taking the U.S. L.S.T. 1023 to the Pacific War, where his ship carried troops to the beaches of Iwo Jima, the Philippines, Okinawa and Tokyo.
Upon separation from active duty in 1946, he attended Tufts University Dental School class of 1950, returning to service as a dentist in the Korean War. After leaving active service, he opened his dental office in Springfield, until joining Dr. Lawrence Life in East Longmeadow until his retirement.
He was a member of many local, state and national organizations, volunteered at the Shriners Hospital, and taught at STCC and Tufts.
In his 79 years of marriage to Jean, he had a great love, friend and companion. They traveled extensively, vacationing in many countries. He lived in Longmeadow for over 60 years and wintered in Delray Beach, FL. He loved golf and all Boston sports teams. He was a charter member of Twin Hills Country Club and had three holes-in-one.
He was predeceased by his brother Raymond Licht. He is survived by his wife Jean, his two sons Richard and Kenneth, his four grandchildren Kate, Eric (Jennifer), Jon (Melissa) and Alexandra and his three great grandchildren Briella, Emmy, and Madison. He will be missed by his extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins, whom he greatly loved.
His funeral will be a graveside service on Sunday Aug. 4th at 11:30 AM at Beth El Cemetery in West Springfield.
